Like that disgusting new couple....

When we first brought Ella home 3 weeks ago, and Polka Dot, our 11 year old Dalmatian, saw her for the first time I swear she seriously gave me a look that clearly said, "you guys suck!". It is the same look she gives us after she returns from a visit to my mom's house, where, unlike our house, the table food is passed out like water.

At first, she was really standoffish toward the new dog. After a day or two, she relaxed enough to run around the yard with Ella but still giving her the cold shoulder in the house. A few more days went by and then she moved into wrestling in the yard with Ms. Ella. Then it was like a wrestling explosion. All wrestling all the time. If they were outside, it was ON!

We were feeling very pleased with this new kinship and enjoying the entertainment that comes watching two dogs, hop, pounce, mouth each other, roll over and repeat.

This week, that wrestling has moved into the house. At any moment they can go from sluggishly sleeping on the floor to a full on, WWE - style smackdown. We are trying to establish that such behavior is for outdoors but that is proving difficult. They are like that new couple we have all spent time around who just can't help constantly touching each other in some way.

Last night, Kevin and I got into bed and as per our ususal routine, gave each dog a treat and shut off the lights. A few moments of silence ensued and then out of Ella's mouth came a distinctive "it's go time", off key moan. At once the room filled with sounds of hopping, rolling, growling, moaning and the game was on. I turned on the lights and there they were, like a guilty couple caught in an embrace, Ella with Polka's collar in her mouth pulling like no tomorrow. We sent them back to their respective beds/corners and turned off the lights again. Once again, a few minutes of silence and then smackdown time. This routine went on for a good 15 minutes during which time Kevin and I went from laughing so hard no sound came out to really wanting to actually, at some point, go to sleep. I was about ready to see if I could get the hose up the stairs or get a bucket of water and then they finally were able to settle down.

This is the typical nightly routine at our house! They have to get out that last little bit of energy before settling down. But you're right about one thing .... there's nothing more hilarious that two dogs having a friendly wrestling match. It is home entertainment at its finest.
